TL;DR

Why We Started ARUNERA is part of the ARUNERA journal — the editorial layer behind the storefront, covering how we source, what we look for in maker relationships, and why our curation standard is more restrictive than typical Cambodia souvenir retail. Read these alongside the cluster-specific guides for the full sourcing story.

The thinking behind building a brand around Cambodian craft, culture, and fair sourcing.

ARUNERA began with a simple observation: Cambodia's craft traditions — carved apsaras rooted in Angkor's temples, hand-woven krama scarves, glazed stoneware with a thousand-year lineage — deserved better representation than the generic, often mass-produced souvenir market typically offers.

The Gap We Saw

Too much of what's sold internationally under a "Cambodian" or "Southeast Asian" label has little genuine connection to the artisans and traditions it claims to represent. We wanted to build something different — a brand built entirely around verified, transparent sourcing from real Cambodian workshops and artisans.

Why Cambodia Specifically

Cambodia's craft economy carries a particular story worth telling — traditions that came perilously close to disappearing during the 20th century's most difficult period, now being deliberately, carefully rebuilt through training programs, family transmission, and renewed artisan pride. We wanted to be part of telling that story honestly.

What We Believe Craft Should Do

We believe a well-sourced object should do more than look attractive — it should connect the person who buys it to the specific individual and tradition behind it, and it should provide fair, meaningful compensation for the skill and time that went into making it.

Building Slowly and Transparently

Rather than scaling quickly through anonymous mass sourcing, we've prioritized building direct, transparent relationships with individual workshops and artisan communities, even where this means a smaller, more carefully curated collection.

Where We're Headed

This philosophy continues to shape every collection we build — from our krama textiles to our ceramics — and it's reflected throughout this guide's emphasis on sourcing transparency, artisan stories, and genuine cultural context.
