01 / The decision
What matters when choosing
Textiles and krama
A krama or textile can be a practical choice when you know the recipient will wear or use it. Check the fiber, dimensions, finish and care instructions. Local design, handmade technique and country of manufacture are separate questions.
Woven pieces and natural fibers
Baskets and woven accessories are often judged by appearance. Examine how the piece carries weight, the quality of edges and joins, and whether it will fit the user’s daily life. Materials alone do not verify a maker or workshop.
Ceramics and small objects
Consider weight, glaze or surface finish, function, safety for the intended use and protection during travel. Ask for information specific to the finished object rather than assuming every craft on a cultural page is a verified purchasable product.
