Choose a Cambodia hotel by matching its location and practical arrangements to your itinerary. Start with the activities you plan to do, then compare the room, arrival process and total booking conditions. A property that photographs beautifully can still be inconvenient for an early excursion, a late flight or the transport you intend to use.
Reviewed on 25 October 2026. This is a comparison checklist, not a ranked list of inspected hotels. Availability, prices and facilities should be confirmed with the individual property for your dates.
Put your activities on the map first
Mark the places you expect to visit during the first two days of the stay. Include meals, excursions and onward transport, not just major attractions. Then compare the hotel's actual address with those locations.
For a city stay, think about how you will return after dinner and reach an early departure. For a countryside or coastal stay, ask about the connection from the station, airport or pier. A property can be well located for relaxation while being less convenient for frequent sightseeing.
Measure convenience against your own priorities. If you intend to spend time around the hotel, its immediate surroundings matter. If you will leave early each morning, reliable transport and breakfast arrangements may matter more than the view from a lounge.
Compare Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and an extension
A Phnom Penh base can be organised around city visits and meals between stops. Compare locations against the museums, neighbourhoods and departure points on your itinerary. Avoid treating every property described as central as equally convenient.
In Siem Reap, decide how you want to balance time in town with your temple excursions. Check the pickup arrangement and what an early start means for breakfast. Our Angkor area versus town comparison explores that specific location decision.
For an island or rural extension, ask the property to describe the complete arrival journey. Confirm the correct pier, road access or pickup point. Do this before booking the connecting transport, particularly when properties with similar descriptions require different routes.
Look beyond the room's headline photograph
Read the description of the exact room category you are booking. Photographs may show several categories, and a broad property description does not establish which features belong to your room.
Check the bed arrangement, room size, bathroom layout and any feature that affects your comfort. If air conditioning, a lift or a particular sleeping arrangement is essential, ask for confirmation rather than inferring it from a star rating.
Pay attention to the position of the room when noise or access matters. Ask whether it faces a road, courtyard or entertainment area. A clear question gives the property something concrete to answer; asking whether the hotel is quiet may produce a much less useful response.
Make accessibility questions specific
Describe the access you need in practical terms. Ask about steps between the vehicle and reception, the route to the room, lift access and the bathroom arrangement. Avoid relying only on a general accessible label.
If helpful, request current photographs of the relevant doorway, shower or route through the property. Dimensions can matter more than a statement that previous guests managed comfortably.
Discuss assistance arrangements in advance, including what staff can actually provide and when. Keep the answer with the booking. If a necessary feature cannot be confirmed, compare another room or property while changing plans is still straightforward.
Check breakfast against the day's schedule
An included breakfast has less value if it starts after your excursion pickup. Ask when service begins and whether an alternative can be arranged for an early departure.
For food allergies or dietary requirements, discuss ingredients and preparation directly. A menu label or a translated note can help the conversation but does not confirm that a kitchen can avoid cross-contact. Ask what the team can reliably provide.
Consider whether you want to eat every morning at the hotel. A nearby breakfast option may suit a slower stay, while an early excursion may favour a confirmed arrangement on site. Compare the complete daily plan rather than automatically choosing the room rate with the longest list of inclusions.
Confirm how check-in will work
Send your expected arrival date and time, especially after an overnight flight. Ask whether reception will be staffed and how you will enter if you arrive late. Keep an established contact number available offline.
Early arrival is a different question from late check-in. Ask when the room is expected to be available, whether bags can be stored and whether any agreed early access carries an additional charge.
If you need an airport pickup, separate that arrangement from the room reservation. Confirm the vehicle, luggage capacity, meeting point and delay policy. Our Techo Airport transport guide explains the details worth agreeing before you fly.
Compare the total terms of the booking
Read the total amount payable for the dates and room you selected. Check which charges are included, how payment is collected and whether a deposit or card authorisation is required.
Compare cancellation deadlines using the time zone stated by the booking channel. A flexible rate may be useful while transport remains uncertain, but its value depends on the actual conditions. Save the terms that applied when you booked.
Check how changes must be requested. A message to the hotel may not amend a reservation made through a separate booking platform. Use the channel responsible for the booking and retain the confirmation when a change is accepted.
Use the hotel as a starting point for discovery
Ask for a few recommendations near the property rather than a full-day sales itinerary. A meal, a café and one locally relevant activity can make an arrival afternoon easier to organise.
When an excursion is suggested, ask who operates it and what is included. Establish whether you are paying the hotel or another provider, where the activity meets and how cancellations work. Treat a recommendation as something to evaluate, not evidence that every detail has been checked for your needs.
For spontaneous exploration, confirm opening hours before setting out. Keep an alternative close by and leave room to change the plan. A useful base should help you reach the surrounding destination as well as provide somewhere comfortable to sleep.
Keep a short comparison note
For each shortlisted property, record five things: location, room category, arrival arrangements, total price and cancellation deadline. Add any requirement that would make the stay unsuitable if it were missing.
Once booked, save the property address, room confirmation and important written agreements offline. Reconfirm time-sensitive arrangements shortly before arrival, especially a late pickup or an early excursion.
Return to the Cambodia travel checklist to place the stay within the full route. Choosing accommodation becomes easier when you can explain exactly what the hotel needs to make possible during those particular days.
