Planning your first Cambodia trip starts with choosing the experiences you want, then giving them enough time. Confirm your arrival and departure airports, count your usable days, and build a route around a few places you genuinely want to explore. This checklist brings the main decisions together and links to six detailed guides for the practical arrangements.

Reviewed on 25 October 2026. Suggested routes are editorial planning examples, not personally tested itineraries or promises of current service availability. Check transport, attraction access and official travel advice before booking.

Count days on the ground

Write down when your inbound flight lands and when your outbound flight leaves. A week between two flight dates does not necessarily give you seven sightseeing days. Arrival formalities, airport transfers and an early departure can remove substantial time from either end.

Give each transfer its own place in the itinerary. Packing, checking out, reaching the station or airport, waiting and getting to your next hotel all count. Compare door-to-door travel rather than the time printed beside a flight or bus service.

For a short trip, two bases may give you more enjoyable days than four. Keep one optional activity in each destination instead of making every hour a commitment. This leaves room for tiredness, weather and a place you unexpectedly want to revisit.

Choose your main reason for visiting

If Angkor is your priority, begin your research with Siem Reap and the temple visits you want to make. Check current ticket conditions and access through the official Angkor Enterprise website. Decide which excursions require an early start before booking evening activities.

For city history, museums and meals between neighbourhood visits, compare Phnom Penh as a base. A countryside or coastal extension might lead you to research Kampot, Kep or Koh Rong. Treat each additional destination as a choice with a transport cost in both money and time.

One useful exercise is to choose three experiences: something to see, something to taste and something to do. A temple visit, a local meal and a cooking or craft activity can form a satisfying day without needing a long list of stops.

Build a route around those priorities

A possible structure is Siem Reap followed by Phnom Penh, with a coastal extension only when your available days support it. This is an example of trip structure, not a fixed recommendation. Check the actual connections for your dates and consider arriving in one city and leaving from another.

Compare the price of changing hotels with the value of another full day in a place. Staying longer can let you visit an attraction at a different time, choose a slower meal or take an activity that would not fit between transfers.

Do not assume a destination is easy to add because it looks close on a map. An island stay involves reaching the departure point, making the boat journey and connecting to the correct beach or property. Ask your accommodation to explain that complete arrival sequence.

Settle entry arrangements early

Check the rules for your passport and purpose of travel before buying non-refundable arrangements that depend on entry. Use the Cambodian e-Visa portal or the relevant Cambodian embassy. Save the requirements you relied on with their date.

Our Cambodia visa guide explains what to verify, including passport details, entry points and the distinction between visa validity and permitted stay. It does not replace a nationality-specific decision from the issuing authority.

Treat the arrival declaration as another task. The e-Arrival preparation guide covers the information to gather, submission timing and keeping the confirmation accessible. Put both documents in your trip folder so that finishing one does not make you forget the other.

Choose the first hotel for arrival convenience

Your first night should be easy to reach after the flight you actually booked. Confirm late check-in, reception arrangements and the correct property address. A room described as central may still require a separate transfer from your chosen bus stop.

Compare accommodation against the activities planned for the next two days. Breakfast timing matters before an early excursion; a staffed reception may matter after a late landing. Ask direct questions about the features you need rather than relying on a category label.

Use our Cambodia hotel booking checklist to compare location, room conditions and cancellation terms. Once the hotel is chosen, save its address, contact number and map pin offline.

Make food and local activities part of the plan

Leave a proper window for meals rather than using them to fill the gaps between transfers. A market visit, cooking class or farm activity can add context to what you eat, provided its itinerary and operating arrangements are clear.

Before booking, ask who runs the activity, where it meets, what transport is included and how long you participate. For food experiences, check dietary needs and ingredient handling directly. A translated allergy note helps a conversation but cannot guarantee a suitable kitchen.

For casual cafés and restaurants, save a few choices near your existing route. Recheck hours before making a special journey. Having an alternative in the same neighbourhood is more useful than building your day around one unconfirmed opening time.

Add transport and safety checks

Check your arrival airport carefully. Our Techo Airport transport guide explains how to compare the public bus with other arrangements and how to plan the final connection to your accommodation.

Review your government's travel advice for every area you plan to enter. A route involving a land border needs a specific operating-status check. Our Cambodia safety guide links the relevant official advice and explains how to apply regional warnings to an itinerary.

Build a buffer before an international departure, especially after a boat connection or a long road journey. Choose it according to the consequences of missing the flight, not just the shortest advertised connection.

Finish with a practical trip folder

Keep your flight confirmations, accommodation addresses, entry documents, transport bookings and emergency contacts together. Download what you will need without data. Share the essential route with someone you trust, including how to contact you if your phone stops working.

Check clothing and luggage against your confirmed activities. Our Cambodia packing list covers weather preparation, documents, equipment and the return journey. Buy specialist items only after you know an activity requires them.

The final review should focus on the connection that could disrupt everything else: an entry permission, a late pickup, a boat departure or an onward flight. Resolve that uncertainty before adding another attraction. Once the essentials work together, your itinerary can leave room for discoveries instead of becoming a sequence of deadlines.
